OpenHydro Site investigation, Alderney
iXSurvey was contracted by Openhydo Limited to conduct a series of site investigations to provide geophysical and oceanographic data to assist with the design and installation of tidal turbines in the waters offshore Alderney.
Data were acquired using multibeam echosounder, sidescan sonar, sub-bottom boomer profiler and vessel mounted acoustic doppler current profiler. Current profilers were also deployed to gather one months' tide and flow data to assist with foundation design.

Initially the selected site was to the North of the Island; however, vessel mounted current data, delivered in real-time from the field, indicated that currents in the selected site in the Swinge were significantly lower than had been expected.
The iXSurvey team therefore undertook a series of scoping surveys at other sites with reported high currents. A site was located in the Race of Alderney with more than double the tidal resource, and a site survey was thereafter undertaken at this location.
