Shadows is a new Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SAS) manufactured by IXSEA SAS. Whereas conventional sonar towfish have a single transducer either side, the Shadows features an array of 15 such sensors on either flank. Using this array, and multi-ping technology, combined with an extremely sophisticated inertial navigation and positioning system, Shadows "paints" each target multiple times, greatly increasing resolution across the whole swath width.
The system acquires 15cm resolution data across up to a 600 metre wide corridor of data at a survey speed of 5 knots. In addition, unlike with conventional sonars, there is no nadir "blind" area as the towfish features a forward looking array.
